Walk the Course Like a Pro: 5 Tricks for Success

Course walking

Course walking

Elite event rider Kevin McNab shares some useful advice on course walking…

1. Attention to detail is the key! (Maybe leave the mobile in your pocket).

2. Have a specific plan for each fence, i.e. type of canter, line in approach and departure.

3. Remember your horse will only see the course once, therefore your plan needs to be clear enough so that your horse understands every question.

4. Always know what your alternatives are. Hopefully you won’t need to use them but if something goes wrong you can take an option without crossing your tracks.

5. For more advanced riders; wheel the course so you know where you need to be at what time. That way you won’t take more than what is needed out of your horse.
